ABSENCE OF LIGHT

THERE I WAS AGAIN,
UNDER THE RICH, HEAVY SMOG OF THE METRO.
A LARGE AREA OF LAND NEAR THE SEA,
YET I CAN HARDLY BREATHE.

THERE IS ILLNESS UNDER THE MOON,
ON THE STREETS AND UNDER VIADUCTS.

THERE'S AGONY ON THE RIVER
AND ALONG IT'S BANK AND BY THE BAY.

THERE'S YELLING BEHIND THE WALLS
AND BEYOND CONSCIOUSNESS.

THERE'S GRIEF IN THE CUBICLES,
ON THE STAGE AND ON THE COUCH.

THERE'S MURMURING AT THE CORNERS,
IN THE CHURCH AND PROFANE CIRCLES.

THERE'S ABUSE IN THE NURSERY,
OF AUTHORITY  AND HAZARDOUS DRUGS.

THERE'S HUNGER FOR FOOD, FOR FAITH,
FOR UNDERSTANDING AND FOR CHARITY.

THERE'S LIFE IN THE METRO.
BUT WITH ITS FEAST OF LIGHTS NIGHTLY,
YOU'LL STILL FEEL THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT.

THERE'S LIFE IN THE METRO
WHERE TRADE IS VALUED MORE THAN LIFE.
